Oh, this is going to end well

No, seriously. Take one of the internet’s most wretched hives of scum and villainy and publish people’s real names for all to see and Google. What could possibly go wrong?

Pro-tip for Blizzard, a number of other companies have already found a way to “contribute to a more positive forum environment”. It’s called moderation, and unfortunately even if Blizzard tried it now they’re five years too late to the party. If you start your forums with the expectation that smack-talk and ass-hattery will get locked or just plain deleted, and people see the better-mannered threads dominating the forums, they tend to post in like manner. Once you’ve let the lowest common denominator define your culture for five years, you’re pretty much stuck with the tone of your forums.

The only bright spot I can see is that all of those forum posters who insist that they’re Chief Technology Officers of major corporations and know far more about fixing bugs than the lazy, stupid devs are going to have their names put up so folks can check their credentials…
